Húsafell has offered some kind of service to travellers for a very long time. In the 19th century the road between the south and north coasts of Iceland lay through Arnarvatnsheiði and it was considered almost natural to stop for a while in Húsafell during the long journey. In 1930 when it became possible to drive through Kaldidalur a tank with gasoline was put in Húsafell. That year many guests came to Húsafell because a national celebration was held at Þingvellir during the summer. The farmer who lived in Húsafell during this period was Þorsteinn Þorsteinsson. Around 1960 Kristleifur Þorsteinsson and his wife, Sigrún Bergþórsdóttir, started selling service to travellers and tourists. They ran such an establishment for many years. In 1990 the Húsafell Travel Service (Ferðaþjónustan á Húsafelli) was established by Kristleifur and Sigrún. Today the Húsafell Travel Service is still being run and is owned by Bergþór Kristleifsson and Hrefna Sigmarsdóttir. In 2003 part of the company dealing with the shop and restauarant was sold to a different company, The Húsafell Travel Center (Þjónustumiðstöðin Húsafelli), which is owned by Sigríður Snorradóttir and Þorsteinn Sigurðsson. Those two companies cooperate in building up the resort in Húsafell and respect the work done by prior generations and are thankful to those pioneers who started offering service to travellers in Húsafell.
